Tasty Tuesdays - Peanut Butter

Today we are talking about Peanut Butter! Peanut butter is a popular snack for people of all ages. It’s also one of those foods you subconsciously question, “Is this healthy?” Let’s dive in and see the facts for ourselves!

Pictured are the Nutrition Facts for 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. As you can see, the most concentrated macronutrient in peanut butter is fat. Most of us might think of peanut butter as protein dense food, which is true! Peanut butter has a solid amount of protein and is a great alternative for meat. But when you break down the nutrition content, the fat in peanut butter makes up more than double the amount of protein! This may seem like too much, however most of the fat in peanut butter is actually healthy fats that are necessary and helpful to our bodies.

What’s important to keep in mind with peanut butter – and other highly concentrated healthy fat foods – is the portion size. When was the last time you only had 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (roughly the size of your thumb)? It’s not easy! But it works best when it is used in small amounts. Keep it handy as an enjoyable, and in moderation, healthy snack.
