Tasty Tuesdays - Nutrition & Muscle Building

Today’s Tasty Tuesday is on Muscle Building. What does building muscle have to do with nutrition? Everything. The body does not work compartmentally - it works as a unit. When your nutrition and your fitness align, the results skyrocket much higher than if you are over-focused on one aspect while neglecting others.

When it comes to building muscle in the gym, the objective is clear. Consistently and gradually add more weight to your regimen. In order to keep up with this goal, your body needs the correct fuel. Here are a few tips to progressively expand your nutrition to match your muscle building goals:

  1. Increase your caloric intake by 200 calories per week. One of the best ways to do this is to spread out these calories in each meal. It can be as simple as adding more of each macronutrient (protein, carbs, fat) to your current meals.

  2. Consider implementing more meals into your daily food intake. If you are currently eating three meals a day, you might not be getting the energy you need as you build muscle. Instead of overloading three meals, eat consistently throughout the day, which can look up to 6-8 times a day.

  3. As you increase the calories, give your body time to adjust. Just as your body needs time to increase weights in the gym, your body needs time adjusting to the food intake. Giving yourself time to see your result will show you exactly how your body is reacting to the increase in food, both in your workouts and everyday living.

  4. Once you are confident in your food intake, hone in on the macronutrients you are eating in each meal. In gaining muscle mass, your goal is to increase your protein intake while minimizing your fat and carb intake. This does not mean you eliminate or completely reduce your fat and carb intake. The goal is to merely add more protein onto your current nutrients.

These steps are part of the whole process in gaining muscle. The best thing you can do to ensure muscle growth is create consistency in your health. Track your progress to see the reality of your improvement and celebrate any/all growth!
