Tasty Tuesdays - Protein

This week we are talking about Protein. Protein is one of the most sought after foods in the gym world. In Greek, the word itself literally means “utmost importance.” It is packed with so many nutrients, it almost seems like an easy buy-in to getting fit. But how well do we actually know this macronutrient?

Here are the basics -

Protein builds. It builds the cells in almost every organ and tissue in the body. This macronutrient provides structural support on top of developing and repairing the body. In our bodies alone, we have over 10,000 different kinds of protein. But only nine, the essentials, come from food.

As with the other macronutrients, there is always a crossover in what the food provides. When we eat protein, we are also eating the other macronutrients packaged with it (mainly fats). This makes the type of protein we choose to eat the most important thing.

Take a look at some of these standard proteins we know and love. Notice how much protein is in each option, along with how much fat in the food as well.

The goal is to get as much protein possible with the least amount of fat. This ensures fullness and leaves behind the less healthy consequences.

Now, what if you don’t eat meat? Great question.

There are plenty of options when it comes to plant-based protein. Many of these proteins are incredibly helpful in losing body weight and are great for your overall health. However, keep in mind that a plant based protein diet needs variety. By eating a variety of different plant based foods, you can get all the nutrients your body needs from the nine essential proteins. If you notice that you do not have enough energy and stamina from your plant based diet, consider adding in more options like some of these below!

As always, keep all of the elements in mind while choosing your plant based food – protein, fat, and also fiber!
