Tasty Tuesdays - Timing Your Nutrition

Today’s Tasty Tuesday is on Timing Your Nutrition. The struggle for many people is not what they eat, but having the time to actually eat it! In our society, we constantly are working and participating in so many different social obligations, that a regular eating schedule falls to the sidelines. However, if you are looking to have a sustainably healthy lifestyle and even improve your current eating patterns, a good first step is taking a look at the timing of your nutrition.

Our bodies need energy to function, and the better a nutrition schedule is (especially when filled with the right foods), the greater chance you give yourself for optimal healthy living.

So why do we need to have a nutrition schedule?

  • Consistency. When your body is on a consistent eating schedule, this increases your metabolism and allows the body to process food well.

  • Energy. Food is our fuel. So making sure you are eating the right amount at a consistent pace, is like making sure your car has enough gas to drive.

What does a consistent eating schedule look like?

  • The best rule of thumb is to have a nutrient dense meal/snack every 3 - 3½ hours. This gives your body the time to process the food and convert it into energy until your next meal. Here is an example of what your daily meals can look like:

    • Breakfast: 7am

    • Mid-morning snack: 10am

    • Lunch: 1:30pm

    • Afternoon snack: 4:30pm

    • Dinner: 8pm

It is easier said than done to make sure you can actually stick with a nutrition schedule. Use these tips to help make this a reality.

  • Low-hassle food. On your next grocery trip, find quality, fortified, whole foods you can take on the go.

  • Meal prepping. If you have even a half hour to put together small ready to eat meals on a Sunday afternoon or the night before work, use the time to prioritize your healthy eating and current goals!
